Nude mice bearing transplanted human prostate cancer cell line PC-3M were treated with male sex hormone. Results demonstrated that low dose of testosterone propionate (TP)(50mg/kg wt.)stimulated the tumor growth
and the androgen receptor(AR)levels and protein kinase C (PKC) activity were elevated in the tumor tissue. On the contrary higher dose of TP(400mg/kg wt.) inhibited the tumor growth
and the AR level and PKC activity in tumor tissue were reduced significantly. These results showed that TP has a biphasic effect on the growth of human prostate cancer PC-3M cell line. The mechanism of the biphasic effect and its relationship between AR and PKC levels are also discussed.
