In order to evaluate the clinical value of positron emission tomography (PET) with 2-[18F] fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (FDG) in the postoperative patients with colorectal carcinoma
59 postoperative patients with colorectal carcinoma were studied with 18FDG PET. 18FDG-PET results were compared with those of CT. The main results are as follows: (1) For 12 local recurrent patients verified by enteroscope or operative pathology
11 patients were diagnosed by 18FDG PET
9 patients of whom had metastases at the same time. (2) 18FDG PET found 139 metastases in 35 patients; while CT detected 62 metastases in 30 patients of this group. 18FDG PET also found double carcinoma in 2 patients. (3) For detecting the recurrence of colorectal carcinoma
sensitivity
specificity and accuracy of 18FDG PET is 91.7%
100% and 98.3%
respectively; which of CT is 76.2%
61% and 75%
respectively. The sensitivity and accuracy of 18FDG PET in detecting the recurrence of colorectal carcinoma are significantly higher than those of CT. Thus 18FDG PET has superiority in detecting recurrence
