Preliminary research results for thermal-mechanical effects of the materials irradiated by high power pulsed ion beams (HPIBs) applied to simulate 1 keV black radiation X-rays are reported. The energy deposition profiles in Al samples for 1 keV black radiation and HPIB from FLASH II accelerator were calculated. Their energy deposition range and variation trend of the profile were essentially similar. The experimental results for the samples irradiated by HPIB from FLASH II accelerator are also presented. After the HPIB irradiation
the chrome plated on the metal surface was stripped by HPIB; the evaporating and melting traces on the surface of Al and Cu samples were visible; the sample’s mass loss was about 30—100 mg; the graphite samples were shattered and the deformation of thin Al samples was about 6 mm. The stress wave of LY12 Al samples irradiated by HPIB was also measured
which attained 35 MPa. It is suggested that HPIB can be used for simulating thermal-mechanical effects of materials irradiated by 1 keV black radiation X rays.
