A method for optimizing the design of beam position monitors (BPM) is described. The finite element method was used to calculate the induced charge produced on four-button electrodes of the BPM. The normalization coefficient could be calculated from this induced signal according to the least square method. Then the design of BPMs with different capabilities was carried out.
