Relationship between free volume properties and miscibility in HIPS-LDPE blend
The free volume properties of high impact polystyrene (HIPS)-low density polyethylene (LDPE) blend have been investigated by means of positron annihilation lifetime spectra (PALS). The measured results show that one component in blends has not large enough size of free volume holes to accommodate the lateral chains and end groups of the other component
thereby producing the immiscibility when blending HIPS and LDPE. In addition
it is found also that the interfacial polarization can result in a decrease in o-Ps intensity I3 during the PALS measurement. The negative deviation of free volume fraction fapp in the measured blends is mainly attributed to the negative deviation of I3.
