Comparison of whole body 18F-FDG PET imaging with skeletal scintigraphy in the diagnosis of bone metastases
The purpose of this study was to assess the value of whole body 18F-FDG PET imaging in the diagnosis of bone metastases in patients with various tumors. Fifty two patients with various tumors underwent whole body 18F-FDG PET imaging and bone scintigraphy simultaneously. The diagnoses of bone metastases were based on histological findings
or the other imaging modalities such as CT
MRI and the clinical follow-up study. Altogether 106 bone metastases were detected in 52 patients. The sensitivity of bone scintigraphy and FDG PET for detecting bone metastases were 89.6% and 63.2% respectively. The sensitivity of PET is lower for detecting the metastases in ribs and skull
and the accurate location of lesions have some difficulty if assessed by PET imaging only. In conclusion
the diagnosis of bone metastases should be cautious by whole body 18F-FDG PET imaging
and it is essential to evaluate in combination with 99mTc-MDP bone scintigraphy.
