The surface modification was studied for the ultra high molecular weightpolyethylene (UHMWPE) samples implanted by 80keV N2+ and C3H8+ ions withvarious doses. Elastic recoil detection (ERD) was used to measure the hydrogenprofiles in the samples. The KyowA’s DF-PM reciprocating tester was used tomeasure the wear quantity of the samples before and after implantation. The resultsshow that a hydrogen deficient surface layer has formed after implantati0n and thewear-resistance of the samples after implantation has been improved. Themechanism of the UHMWPE surface modification was discussed.
