A survey of external exposure from natural environmental radiation in Shanghai from 1985 to 1987 was made by thermoluminescence dosimeter. The annual population-weighted external exposure of residents and the area weighted external exposure in Shanghai area were 104.8 (×0.258µC/kg) and 99.2 (×0.258µC/kg) respectively.

A comparison between the survey of annual integral exposure in Shanghai during this period and the survey of radiation dose in whole country from 1982 to 1984 was also made.
